What is the age requirement for New Students? Kindergarten through 11th grade (at regular weekday school).
  • Beginning level students: Kindergarten through 8th grade (Transitional-Kindergartners will be placed on a waiting list and will be accepted if space is available)
  • Other level students: through 11th grade.
Is there an entrance exam?
  • Not for beginning level students.
  • For students who can read and write hiragana and would like to be in a class other than the beginning level, pre-registration and a placement test will be required. (Placement test dates are scheduled for June 10, July 8, and August 19, 2017).

When can we observe a class? 

If your child is eligible to enroll in the 2017-18 school year、please let us know via the contact form your requested day, time and class level.

  • Observation Period:  Saturdays between 9/16/17-11/4/17
  • Time: 8:30-9:10 -or- 10:35-11:15
  • Class Level:
    • Beginning
    • If not at the Beginning Level, please provide a brief background in Japanese studies including the ability to speak, read and write hiragana, katakana and kanji.
  • Parents and prospective students are welcome to come together.

If your child is eligible to enroll in the 2018-19 school year, the Observation Period will be from mid-January through April. We will announce the specific dates at the beginning of January, so please check our website then.

When can I register my child for the new school year? Pre-registration begins in January for the new school year, which begins in September. Pre-registered applicants will be informed of registration procedures in early June. 
Do you accept new students mid-year? New students are accepted between September and mid-November if space is available. 
How do I register? If we are accepting new students, there will be an announcement on our homepage regarding registration. 
When are classes held? Saturday mornings (see the “Calendar” page for dates, “Class and Fees” page for A and B class times)
How many students per class?  Up to 12 in the beginning level classes. Up to 16 in the older classes.
Can I choose between A & B Class? We ask parents to leave this decision to the staff. We select the class that best fits your child based on his/her level and age group. (For continuing students, we also consider teachers’ recommendations.) Therefore, each of our 16 classes are unique. If you have a schedule conflict that cannot be changed, we will do our best to accommodate your child in the next best class, but please understand it may not always be possible. Please note that two school days per year (Stage Presentation and Graduation/Completion Ceremony) are all morning events.
